Thok-Naath Culture and Language Program
Providing New Hope
In 2006, Mr. Thomas Nyang founded Thok-Naath language program to assist South Sudanese adults and children by offering language and culture programs. In addition to learning about culture and language, these children are well rounded citizens prepared to impact other people’s life.
Jarweng Educational Development offers a new opportunity for hope within the Sudanese refugee community through curriculum that covers topics such as health, education, employment, and family relationships.
These topics are taught in a full immersion program, using both traditional Sudanese texts as well as additional resources that have been translated from English into the Naath language.
Developing literacy skills in the Naath language is the key to facilitating literacy in English. And literacy in English is the key to providing a better future for these refugee parents and their children.
Communicating in the Naath language is also vital for successful acculturation and integration into the community, educating both children and adults about health, nutrition, education, job skills, parenting, and family relations.
By educating the younger generations in their heritage culture and the reading and writing of their families’ native language facilitates cross-generational communication and understanding.
The goal of this program is to develop a well-rounded, empathetic individuals with developed leadership skills.
Two Very Different Futures
The literacy, educational, social, and recreational opportunities that Jaweng Educational Development can provide, has the ability to positively impact the future of the lives of the southern Sudanese refugees and their families by helping to bridge generational gaps, and successful integration into American society, while keeping ties to their heritage and culture.
South Sudan is still in desperate need of education, training, and material support. Often it is language and culture barriers that prevent this help from being as effective as possible.
Perhaps one of South Sudan’s greatest hopes lies in within its youth living here in America, as they begin to take advantage of the opportunities and education afforded to them through Jarweng Educational Development. Many will be able to return and help change the future of South Sudan. They will already have integral grasp and knowledge of the culture, language, and needs of their people.
Summer Camp
Our annual summer camp provides young children with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the vibrant Nuer language and culture. The camp takes place at two locations, alternating between Escondido and City Heights each year. This enriching experience enables participants not only to learn the Nuer language but also to explore and appreciate the depth of Nuer cultural traditions. Join us for a memorable summer of education and cultural enrichment by completing the form on our ‘How to Get Involved’ page.
